Day 20, June 6th
5354/177 miles
Good morning...
Not a bad day, left gatton campsite, a very much returnable area. Tropical, but cool. Driving, to campsight C south of long Beach Washington, we make several stops, photos and amazing scenery, coffee at a cool coffee shop. A very nice ride.
We both seem to navigate the morning very well. Up at 5am, moving slowly and peacefully, the lake is a shade of pink, very calm. In the background is the caring of black birds. On further inspection, we have new neighbors late last night, that have coolers open and the birds are just going to town on everything. I hope they don't get a stomach ache. After my second trip to the bike, I find a very large and maybe happy pitbull. We both circle my bike as I yell to the owner, "hey, come get your dog and put a leash on it". Not sure if im breakfast for the dog or just wants some affection. I really don't want to find out. Sounds like Andy calling for the dog to return. Locking his chops and giving me one last eyeball. He heads back to his tent. I walk by the site and what a mess, stuff everywhere, birds going to town. Time to leave. A cup of pre breakfast coffee whilst packing up, then hot cereal hits the spot. I finish off with what I call coffee with Nicholas, this great Japanese coffee he brought back from Japan for me. I'm running low on it, so may need to find a source. Packing up, we roll to long Beach Washington. This is before we go to Austoria and then to rainer.
The drive is nice, a stop at a supermarket where I chat with a fellow involved in finding housing for the homeless. He finds we are from Hawaii and mentions wanting to move to Molokai. I try to explain, maybe a different island mo-betta. Off for fuel and visor/windscreen cleaning takes place. Bonus for me, I get a call from janet while I'm gassing up, a pleasant surprise and great to hear her voice, she sounds wonderful. Don't tell her, but I really miss her. We chat about Nicholased new job and all things family. Nicholas celebrates his wow, 31 years on this planet on june 8th. What an amazing kid, scratch that adult he is. He starts his new job today, or I think yesterday.
Campground extraordinaire we find ourelves at site C spot155, It comes with a hot shower, deers wandering by the sound of the pacific and easy walking to the beach. And we are not far from Waikiki Beach, a must explore option for sure.
It is funny, traveling giant distances and long days I seem to bable more with my fingers, verses beinh in the same place for two days, not much writting. At camp for two days, maybe I was just to busy, hiking and driving, or eating a medium hawaiian pizza. Howard laughs on our way here, "hey I'm amazed you finished that whole pizza". Then a few minutes later "and that was after eating my garlic toast, two slices". We both laugh, and there goes my diet.
Tomorrow, there is a 9am tidepool walk, might be fun. For now we are at camp it is 249pm and we are both washed and cleaned. Did I mention hot showers...
Off for a walk on the beach. Nice but cold and slightly windy. Refreshing for sure. We turn in off the beach as we watch some brave surfers hit to cold surf. It really was cold water. Heading back we find our camp host Dan who spent his early years I. Hawaii and sells firewood, we are set for tonight for sure.
I go for a ride wanting to explore a bit more in shorts and a light jacket. A store, Howard has found Kambucha and likes it, I get a beer and an ice coffee for breakfast. I head on to the southern lighthouse and previous gun emplacement. Nice walks for sure.
