Day 13, May 30
333/4032

333/4032 miles, still cold, but we are better prepared, Howard and I look like the stay puff people, or is that Hans and Franz with several jackets on.

A fun drive with more bears along the road, one eagle flying by was amazing. Forgot to mention we saw a red fox on the way to Stewert yesterday. Great drive even if cold. I do love my heated jacket!

I am up early at 4, digging thru the phone, Howard is up not much later, and we get moving to go visit Salmon glacier.  Out the door with passports (so we can get back into canada) at 630am.  It is not raining as we head out.  When we asked about riding to the glacier look out, the road crew that stopped us for the road work that takes place every summer, I asked if it was open all the way up. She was front Stewert and didn't think it had been cleared all the way up yet.  The ride up,  is about 22 miles with less than a quarter of it paved, lots of construction trucks on the road not sure why.  🤔   We get with in about 3 miles of the viewing spot when we come across a construction truck backing down the hill.  I ask and they say, ahh motorcycle, yeah (in that canadian drawel) yeah you gottem, go for it, and they take off down the hill, going backwards?  I suspect we should be worried.

So we go up a few more turns when low and behold, snow across the road and lots of it. We are done heading up hill.  We do find a bunch of snow machines, so I get on one for some classic silly pictures.

We pull up and get off our amazing and magic steeds and take some photos of the scenery, as I walk to the edge, I hear like an electronic device from my bike, so I walk back and can't think what the sound might be, but the sound is gone.  I walk back to the edge and this crazy sound happens again, I do this like five times, even turning the bike on and off.  I finally tell Howard, I hear a sound, and only when I get about ten feet from the bike, so I ask him to help find where the sound is coming from.  I walk away, and we both hear the sound, so I walk back, sound stops.  Is it my key fob for the bike?  I walk away again when we both hear it, a few more times of this and we notice the sound is from the hill side.  We realize every time I walk away an owl or something was making this crazy bzzd bzzd sound.  We both laugh big time at this.

So after some pics we walk up the snowed area, snow is soft not ice like maunakea gets. So back on the bike Howard goes first and I get some fun pics as he makes it look easy.  I go next and for some reason I don't eat it or drop the bike.  We ride up further, only to find a ton of snow and impossible road, so within a couple miles we are stopped by mother nature. But we do get some great views and pics of the tail of the salmon glacier. The morning is still young at 8am, so back to the boarder we go.  I stop to mail some postcards and drive out to the harbor area, it is truly beautiful look out towards to pacific ocean.

I head back in and stop for the usual interagation at the boarder, no, no weed, guns bear spray fruit food or things I may have picked up while is the usa, aka hyder, we both look at each other knowing nothing is open in hyder so I probably didn't stop for anything.  He hands me back my passport and off I go dreaming of a coffee shop in stewert.  Alas they are all closed the lady that owns one say to try another spot, but it is really just a store with coffee in foam cups, no eggs and bacon there, so back to the hotel we go, which apparently is the only game in town as there are actually many locals there.  Two cups of coffee some omelets and we walk back across the st to to pickup and get ready to head out.

This morning I had noticed a bunch of rain going thru windy.com, most of it to be kicking in by 11.  By 1030 it is misty as we check out and head back down the road.  It is not bad and we are better prepared for the cold and rain.  There is a beautiful blue glacier just outside of town, so we stop for the usually photos.

We are headed to horseshoe bay to take the ferry to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. It will take a couple nights to get there, as it is about 886 from stewert canada.  We are now stopped at Kagger lake campground, so we still have about 600 miles of ridding before we get to the ferry.

Arriving at Kagger, we find a happy brown bear as we drive to our campground, not a great sign for sure.  The campground is isolated, but we do see one other tent and a guy ride by on his bike. It overlooks Kager lake, but the trees make it hidden. 5pm and Howard snaps his fingers and a warm fire pops out of the fire pit.  He is pretty good at the fire lighting, no longer needing a fan to light the fire. So much so, he doesn't notice the fan on the fire pit, and by then it is to late, the fan is melted.  I'm not to worried as I suspect I won't need to cool off anytime soon, bloody cold.  Well dinner time, looks like beef stroganoff tonight, one of my favorite.

Well just heard back from San diego bmw, no joy on my front shock, part is spendy, so will nurse it home and work on it there. Such is life of motorcycles.

Keep it real!
J
